Forget drugs or nicotine – the real addiction besetting our fair nation is chilli. Apparently, the reason people get hooked on the stuff is because of its capsaicin (the chemical released by chillies to stop us from eating them) content. When capsaicin binds with pain receptors, it produces a burning sensation, increased heart rate and the release of sweet, sweet endorphins.
And while the stuff’s well known for its application on tacos, cocktails are also a highly effective delivery method. This particular concoction, The Bone, was created by Brooklyn bartender Dave Wondich and is straight-up spicy.
To make your Bone, fill a mixer with ice and pour in a generous shot of American rye whiskey. Follow that up with a squeeze of lime juice, a swirl of simple syrup and a dash of your favourite hot sauce. One or two dashes should suffice for those with a lower tolerance, but if you’ve got a serious chilli problem, add three.
Shake, then strain into an ice-filled glass. Top it off with some Schweppes Soda Water and approach with caution. Don’t say you haven’t been warned.
