Last month, Broadsheet and the Cocktail Revolution gave workplaces in Sydney and Melbourne the opportunity to learn the basics of mixing drinks. The response was overwhelming; hundreds of businesses in dozens of industries entered for a chance to learn how to mix their own.
We chose six of our favourite entries, and rocked up with Dave Kerr from Melbourne bar The Beaufort thebeaufort.com.au and a boxful of booze - for a special Friday afternoon knockoff.
For our first Melbourne Masterclass, we headed to the zoo to mix some drinks with the keepers (not the animals).
What exactly do you guys do?
Zoos Victoria operates three world-class zoos, Healesville Sanctuary, Melbourne Zoo and Werribee Open Range Zoo. We are committed to fighting wildlife extinction, working locally and globally to deliver tangible conservation outcomes. Our vision is to be the world’s leading zoo-based conservation organisation.
Is it hard work?
We work hard to fight extinction and like any role it has its challenges, but at the end of the day the work we do is rewarding. It’s pretty special to be able to escape the desk, clear the head and wander through the zoo and be reminded of why we are here.
Do you think it’s important to have staff knockoff drinks after work?
Yes. It’s great to be able to unwind after a long week with your workmates, chat about the week that was and welcome the weekend.
Which bars in Melbourne do like to hang out in?
There’s so many great Melbourne bars to choose from – but summer calls for a rooftop or beer garden.
What is it that appeals to you about a good venue?
The atmosphere – a relaxed vibe, good drinks and some music added to the mix.
What did you take away from the Mix Your Own Sessions?
The Mix Your Own Sessions provided a great reminder of how simple it can be to get together with colleagues, share a few laughs and learn something new. We walked away knowing how simple it can be to mix a great cocktail, but I think we all have a greater appreciation for those who mix cocktails for a living – we’ll stick to fighting wildlife extinction, and we’ll let the bartenders mix our drinks. Thanks Schweppes and Broadsheet for the great fun!
